Sarah Ashford's newest work, inspired by the gracefulness of peacocks and swans, represents a transformation from her earlier collage and drawings that were just as figurative.
She emphasizes these multilayered figurative-like contours by utilizing her eye for pattern and colour that together express an organic framework all her own.
There's a visual richness to these birds that, "initially fascinated me as the perfect form for expression with an application and manipulation of mixed media". By layering
cut-outs, pattern, and glazes of colour to create an melange within the overall shape of the birds, her own unique language emerges that belies the beauty and serenity
of the exterior. "My process of spontaneously assembling seemingly disparate images, from mono prints to wallpaper patterns, applying layers of paint and cut up
charcoal drawings... a new drama emerges".
